Ironwood, also known as Eastern Hophornbeam is the hardest wood here in Ontario. 4th. hardest in the world. It was once used as bearings and axles in horse drawn wagon wheels. It can take over a forest without proper thinning out. Virtually unbreakable.

*NOTE* Internal bowls pre- charred...Over time, carbon and resin builds on the pipe walls protecting it from burning through the wall. This becomes a protective coating as the pipe naturally ages. (breaking in).
*There is a lot of controversy on the web about certain woods being toxic & allergenic. 2 I speak of are Cocobolo & Rosewood. Which I dont use. Most articles about this are based on sanding etc. The dust is the cause of allergins by inhalation or depositing on skin....not necessarily the finished pipe, which is charred & sealed. For further studies Google it and come to your own conclusions....Thank you.
